What are Dental Fillings?
Tooth decay is one of the most common oral conditions in the world. It affects people of all ages, and some individuals are more susceptible to decay than others. Poor dietary and hygiene habits can further contribute to tooth decay. When a cavity is found, it is important to have the decay removed and the small hole left behind restored with a filling.
Why are Dental Fillings needed?
Most often, a filling is necessary when you have a cavity. The cavity is a small area of tooth decay that is affecting the health of the tooth. Over time, this decay can get worse and eventually make its way down to the pulp of the tooth. Before it’s allowed to get this bad, the decay is removed and replaced with filling material.
Who is a candidate for Dental Fillings?
The best way to find cavities is with a physical examination. We may need x-rays to further identify hard-to-spot areas of decay. If it’s found that you have a cavity, we will recommend having a filling placed. It is best to have the filling placed as soon as possible to prevent that decay from getting worse.
What happens during the procedure for Dental Fillings?
We begin by administering a local anesthetic to the area. The decay is then removed from the tooth carefully using a slow speed drill. Once this is done, we will prep the hole for the material and match the color of the filling to the tooth. The composite resin filling material is then placed inside the hole and any excess is removed. The filling is cured with a light to harden it. You can expect your fillings to last for many years without needing to be replaced with proper care and good oral hygiene. Tooth-colored fillings are ideal for patients who want to keep their smile looking flawless and beautiful despite having had dental work done in the past.
