Dental Exams & Cleanings

What are Dental Exams & Cleanings?

A dental exam is performed to look for various conditions within the mouth. Cleanings are done by licensed hygienists who work to thoroughly clean the teeth of tartar and stains. Both an exam and cleaning can be a crucial part of your preventative care regimen. Together, we are able to provide you with the care that you need to detect minor problems while preventing issues from happening in the first place.

Why are Dental Exams & Cleanings needed?

Over time, a chalky substance known as tartar begins to build up on the teeth. Despite your best hygiene efforts at home, it’s nearly impossible to get rid of tartar on your own. Tartar can contribute to both gingivitis as well as tooth decay. Cleanings help to remove this tartar before it is able to affect your oral health. Exams are just as important, as they allow us to spot minor problems before they are able to get worse.

When Should You Have Dental Exams & Cleanings

When should you have Dental Exams & Cleanings?

We recommend having a cleaning and exam done every six months. This allows us to keep your teeth in pristine condition while monitoring and checking for any changes to your oral health. If there is a problem, it is easily detected and treatment can be started as soon as possible. Every member of your family should strive to come into the office twice a year for these checkup appointments.

What happens during typical Dental Exams & Cleanings?

The appointment begins with a cleaning that is performed by one of our dental hygienists. The hygienist uses special tools to scrape and clean the teeth. The teeth are then polished and flossed to a high shine. The gums are checked for any visible signs of gum disease and gingivitis. Our doctor then comes into the office and performs the exam, creating a treatment plan for any additional work as needed.
