What Are Dental Crowns?
A dental crown is a tooth-shaped cap that is placed over a damaged or weakened tooth to restore its shape, size, and strength. Crowns are typically made from porcelain, ceramic, or other durable materials that match the color of your natural teeth. They are used to protect and restore teeth that cannot be repaired with a simple filling or bonding.
Common reasons for needing a dental crown include:
- To restore a tooth after a root canal.
- To repair a cracked or fractured tooth.
- To cover and support a tooth with a large filling.
- To improve the appearance of a discolored or misshapen tooth.
- To protect a weakened tooth from breaking.
- To support a dental bridge.
Benefits of Dental Crowns
Dental crowns offer numerous benefits, including:
- Restored Function: Crowns allow you to eat, chew, and speak with ease, providing full functionality to damaged teeth.
- Natural Appearance: Crowns are custom-made to match the color and shape of your natural teeth, ensuring a seamless, attractive smile.
- Durability: Crowns are long-lasting and can protect your teeth for many years with proper care.
- Improved Confidence: A crown restores the appearance of your smile, giving you the confidence to show off your teeth without worry.
The Dental Crown Process
At Pierce Family Dentistry, the process of getting a dental crown typically requires two visits:
1. Consultation and Tooth Preparation
During your first visit, Dr. Brandon Pierce or Dr. Jennifer Pierce will examine your tooth and determine if a crown is the best treatment option. If a crown is needed, the tooth will be prepared by removing any decay or damaged areas. Dental X-rays may be taken to assess the health of the tooth’s root and surrounding bone.
Once the tooth is prepared, we’ll take impressions of your tooth to create a custom crown that fits perfectly. While your permanent crown is being fabricated, a temporary crown will be placed over the tooth to protect it.
2. Placement of the Permanent Crown
At your second visit, the custom crown will be placed. We will remove the temporary crown, clean the tooth, and check the fit of the new crown. Once the crown is properly adjusted, it will be securely bonded to your tooth using dental cement. After the crown is placed, your bite will be checked, and final adjustments will be made to ensure a comfortable fit.
Caring for Your Dental Crown
With proper care, dental crowns can last for many years. To ensure the longevity of your crown, we recommend the following:
- Maintain good oral hygiene: Brush twice a day and floss daily to keep your crown and surrounding teeth clean.
- Avoid chewing on hard objects: Refrain from chewing ice, hard candies, or using your teeth as tools, as this can damage your crown.
- Schedule regular check-ups: Regular dental visits for exams and cleanings will help ensure your crown stays in good condition and that any potential issues are caught early.
