Tooth PainRoot canals help to alleviate the pain that comes with a badly infected tooth, and are sometimes the only treatment available to save a tooth from extraction. The dentists at Pierce Family Dentistry Dr. Connie Pierce, Dr. Brandon Pierce, and Dr. Jennifer Pierce offer root canal therapy and other cosmetic and general dentistry services in San Diego, CA.

Root Canal Therapy in San Diego, CA

When the soft tissue inside a tooth (known as the pulp) becomes inflamed and infected due to bacteria, it causes pain and other complications if left untreated. Bacteria can reach the pulp through a crack or fracture in the tooth. A root canal procedure cleans the tooth from the inside out and removes the damaged tissue. Although it sounds painful and traumatic, the procedure itself is very similar to getting a filling for a cavity.

First, you'll need a dental exam and x-rays to determine if a root canal is necessary. You'll receive a local anesthetic to numb the area so that you're comfortable throughout the procedure. The dentist will remove any traces of bacteria and damaged tissue. After it has been cleaned, the tooth is sealed and protected with a filling or dental crown.

Signs and symptoms that you may need a root canal include:

  • Pain, especially when you bite down or apply pressure to the tooth
  • Significant hot or cold sensitivity
  • A dark spot on the tooth
  • Swelling, tenderness, or signs of infection like pus on the gums around the tooth
